ASSISTED STRETCHING
MET (Muscle Energy Technique): is a type of stretching that has been shown, the most effective in many scientific researches in order to improve flexibility and range of motion.
MET are a type of manual therapy technique which aims to lenghten, strengthen and improve the range of movement of the muscles and the range of motion of the joints.
The therapist will resist the desired muscle while you contract it and push against the therapist. This contraction is held for about 7 seconds. After that, the client will release the tension and the therapist will bring the muscle into a deeper stretching through the activation of a neurophysiologic mechanism called reciprocal inhibition permitting to stretch the muscle further. The process is repeated several times until reaching the maximum stretch.
Everything is done incorporating deep breathing in order to bring a further level of relaxation into the client's muscles and mind
This is one of the most effective type of stretching.
A recent systematic review on multiple studies indicated that MET can:
• Increased ROM.
• Increased flexibility of the muscles.
• Increased the strength of the muscles stretched
• Pre-contraction stretching lowers excitability of the muscle.
• A pre-stretch contraction has been associated with greater acute gains in ROM compared to
static stretching in many studies.
• In contrast to static stretching, dynamic stretching is not associated with strength or performance deficits
• Assist in rehabilitation after injury
• Helps in establishing a pattern of coordinated motion
